Granite Grind - "A Huge Success"
Mar 01, 2010

Almost 200 mountain bike riders competed in the inaugural Granite GrindLake Mountain's first ever mountain bike event a huge success! Last Saturday the 20th February almost 200 mountain bike riders competed in the inaugural Granite Grind. The event was held in conjunction with the Ventou Marysville Lake Mountain Challenge a recreational ride, which attracted over 900 entrants, approximately 700 of which made the tough climb from Marysville to Lake Mountain.

The Granite Grind was based on a single track race loop of approximately 9kms, with entrants having the option of doing one or two laps of the course. The track was new to most of the competitors, with trail construction starting in October of last year and completion of the track happening only a few weeks ago, providing a great opportunity for riders to explore the first stage of the new trail network.

The average temperature on the day was a sunny seventeen degrees, however strong winds of up to 46kms per hour played havoc early on. GG_Ben.jpgExcitement filled the air with cyclists everywhere providing a festival like atmosphere.

Local MP Ben Hardman was present to officially open stage one of the mountain bike trail network, cutting the ribbon in front of a crowd of riders and spectators, just prior to the race commencing.

Lenny the Leadbeater's Possum joined the cyclists on his bike at the start line for a pre-race briefing. Whilst Lenny didn't complete the course, he was there with other spectators to cheer racers on as they reached the finish line!

>Lenny the Leadbeaters Possum joined the cyclists on his bike at the start line for a pre-race briefing. Results for the day saw Erica Gurner win the overall ladies and Sam Chancellor win the overall mens category, both with outstanding times. Other winners for the day included Jay Williams first in the open mens one lap and Nicola Woolford in the open womens one lap. Masters winners were Mary Hall in the womens 2 lap, Leonie Lewis in the womens 1 lap, Andrew Hall in the mens 2 lap and Karl Neumeister in the mens 1 lap. Well done to Andrew Meagher and Adam Brennan winning the Under 19 and Under 14 categories.

Trudi Ackerman, Marketing Manager at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort summed up the success of the day saying "A huge effort has been put in by staff and management at the resort to make this event happen and for the day to turn out so well makes it all worthwhile. There is a real excitement about the place at the moment and this event provides a great introduction of future things to come at Lake Mountain."

GG_Winners.jpgFor a full list of race results and further information about mountain bike riding at Lake Mountain visit www.lakemountainresort.com.au.

Lake Mountain would like to thank all of the sponsors on the day including the National Australia Bank, Croydon Cycleworks, Murrindindi Cycle Club, CycleSport Victoria, Rochford Wines and the Murrindindi Shire Council. Thank-you also to all those volunteers who gave up their time to help not only on the day, but also prior to the event offering their services for several trail building days.

Mountain Bike Trail Building at Lake Mountain
Feb 02, 2010

Mountain Bike Trail Building at Lake Mountain

NAB_Day_1.jpgOn Thursday 28th January a bus load of National Australia Bank (NAB) business bankers arrived at Lake Mountain for a day of mountain bike trail building. As part of their employment at NAB staff are encouraged to undertake up to two volunteer days per year, helping with various project that benefit the community.

The crew of 43 bankers were split into small groups and assigned a Lake Mountain staff member to work with for the day. A single track mountain bike trail of approximately 10kms is currently being built to host the resorts first ever mountain bike event called the "Granite Grind" on Saturday 20th February 2010. This track formed the basis of their days work.

A variety of tasks were undertaken on the day including bridge building, retaining walls for new sections of track, trail maintenance and track clearing.

With NAB being the major sponsor for the event it was very fitting that they be involved in the trail building process. Over twenty of these NAB staff have there names down to participate in the event on 20 February.

NAB_Day_2.jpg Brett Weinberg, General Manager at Lake Mountain highlighted the importance of the day saying "As part of the recovery efforts here at Lake Mountain we are focused on becoming more of a year round destination, with mountain bike riding forming a key part of this. It is great to have the support of the National Australia Bank and their assistance goes a long way to helping us get to where we want to be".

This is the second volunteer day of this nature that the NAB have participated in at Lake Mountain since the Black Saturday bushfires, with a crew of one hundred and forty NAB star achievers coming to the resort in November to help with construction of a boardwalk at Snowy Hill. Further NAB volunteer days are planned for the future.

NAB_Day_3.jpgOn Saturday 30th January a mountain bike trail building working bee was also held at Lake Mountain. A fantastic response from local clubs such as Murrindindi Cycle Club and Fat Tyre Flyers meant great numbers turned up on the day. The working bee was not only about trail building, but also gave the volunteers an opportunity to ride the race loop and see first hand the progress of the trail network.

Mark Raymond - Australian Biathlon Team
Jan 13, 2010

Mark Raymond from the Australian Biathlon Team
reports on the World Cup in Sweden and Austria.

World Cup Östersund Sweden.

3/12/09Mark Raymond

Sweden is such a beautiful country in winter.  I really love seeing the snow covered forests and rolling mountains.  What I don't like about Sweden is the roads.  Most roads don't get cleared of snow and it packs down to form an ice layer.

The side of the road is often undefined and can trap you very quickly.  I found this out in the middle of nowhere, sliding off the edge of the road at 60km/h.  The van and its occupants were all ok.  Thank you to the generous tractor driver for his help getting the van out.

The first World cup of the season is always a nervous affair.  All the athletes are trying to check there form against other athletes, to see if their summer training has paid off.  I was lucky to have had the IBU Cup to get the butterflies out of the systems.

The skiing at Östersund was fantastic, with cold and fast snow.  The trails for the race were quite demanding, long steep climbs and fast sharp downhill corners.

I raced twice in Östersund, a 20km first and then 10km race.  Both races were held under lights, I find skiing under lights fine but shooting is very difficult.  This showed in my results, missing 2-1-3-1 in the 20km and 2-2 in the 10km.

I skied well in both races but missed too many targets to be competitive at this level.  Happy with my ski form I'm confident for the next World Cup

I would like to thank Alan Eason for his support, waxing and coaching during the World Cup as Paul Connor was unable to attend.

We now have a two day drive back to Austria for the next World Cup.  I'm not looking forward to it at all.

World Cup Hochfilzen Austria.

15/12/09
m
The second World Cup was a hectic affair for me. After driving down from Sweden, I was very tired and was worried about getting sick. I was also unsupported as my coach Paul Connor was not arriving from Australia until the day of the race.

I trained easy during the week, on the slow, soft, wet snow of Hochfilzen, feeling flat and tired.  My shooting was on form and the targets were falling without effort.

I had only one race at Hochfilzen, a 10km, held on the Saturday afternoon.
By the time race day rolled around I felt better and ready to race well.  The conditions for the race were terrible.

It had been raining most of the night and then started to snow mid morning.  The ski tracks were deep and slow.

The skiing was just so hard as every glide you sank into the snow.

I raced well in the very testing conditions.  I missed 2-1 in my shooting.  This was a good shooting  average for the day as it was windy and snowing.

My result was another Olympic Qualifying time.  This also re qualified me for World Cup after Christmas.  Keeping my plan on track for the 2010 Winter Olympics

Thank you for your support.

New and Exciting Mountain Bike Trails
Oct 20, 2009

New and exciting mountain bike trail network at Lake Mountain

Trail DevelopmentThe need to increase visitor numbers during non-winter months and the growing demand for mountain biking nationwide was presented Lake Mountain with an opportunity to expand on the existing trails and create a purpose built mountain bike trail network. The focus of the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort Mountain Bike Trail is the Lake Mountain to Marysville Trail.

This will be an iconic ride, aimed to attract visitors to the area by linking the two destinations together. The success of this project is an important component of the recovery efforts of the area after the Black Saturday bushfires.

The resort is hoping to have stage one of the trail network completed by February 2010, with an event to launch the new trails to be held on Saturday 20th February 2010 in conjunction with the Marysville-Lake Mountain cycling challenge. The trail network will encompass a variety of terrain, obstacles and challengers to meet all levels of ability, skill and fitness.

2010 Lake Mountain Sprint
Feb 02, 2010

Rallying Together for Bushfire Relief

The Lake Mountain Sprint tarmac rally will return to the mountain of its moniker at the end of March, bringing more than just exotic cars and exciting action to the twisting tarmac. The two-day event will also produce some much needed tourist dollars and support for the MMSPORTS.jpgfire-ravaged community of Marysville and the alpine resort of Lake Mountain, which was all but destroyed in the Black Saturday inferno.
Those catastrophic fires on Saturday February 7th, 2009 forced the cancellation of the 2009 Mountain Motorsports event. However, the local community, which thrived on tourism as its main income, is excited about the prospect of visitors - and rally cars - returning to the town in 2010.

The Mountain Motorsports event will heighten awareness of the continuing difficulties in the region even a year after the fires, and the rally drivers, crews and spectators will be on hand to support local businesses, hotels in the Buxton, Alexandra and Healesville areas, the local CFA, and the Lake Mountain resort.

LMSPRINT_news.jpg"What a great way for the Tarmac Rallying Community to support the fire affected businesses in the Murrundindi Shire," commented Peter Washington from Mountain Motorsports. "It will also be the third round (of four) in the Australian Tarmac Championship, and give crews the opportunity to gain valuable points before they head to Targa in April," he added.

In 2010, the local team of Derek Reynolds and Ray Baker in their Mitsubishi Evolution are being supported by both the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort and Mountain Motorsport. Derek grew up in the Marysville area and is an avid Lake Mountain skier and local business owner. "It has been an incredibly difficult year for all of us and the opportunity to participate in the event to increase awareness of the continuing need for people to visit the region and in particular the Lake Mountain Resort as it develops awareness of its attractions all year round. Activities such as skiing, mountain bike riding, hiking and enjoying a meal or a coffee on the balcony at the bistro. I can't wait to let loose on that beautiful piece of road I have travelled on so many times. As for our competitiveness, we are not going up there to make up the numbers but time will tell," Derek said.
The residents of Marysville and surrounding fire-affected areas have been rebuilding the community infrastructure over the past year, with the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority recently reporting more than $1bn dollars has been spent and 1400 building permits have been approved in the past year. Around 50 houses in Marysville have been rebuilt, along with a café, bakery, supermarket and post office.

Mountain Motorsports will be taking a collection from all of its competitors and officials and be giving the money raised to the local community.

"Come and see what we have to offer and where we are at with the recovery effort," said Trudi Ackerman, Marketing Manager at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. "We are really looking forward to the buzz of Australia's top tarmac rally drivers at full noise on our usually quiet country road again."

The 2010 Lake Mountain Motorsports Sprint Launch will be held at the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort atop Lake Mountain at 11am on February 15th.

The Lake Mountain Sprint will be run over two days on March 20 and 21, with a minimum of 10 timed runs up the 10km tourist road. There and four spectator points on the tourist road to view the action.

Australian Tarmac Championship
Oct 20, 2009

Australian Tarmac Championship announced

Lake Mountain Sprint.Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Australia's premier tarmac rally, Targa Tasmania, will be the cornerstone event of a new national series.

The newly-created Australian Tarmac Championship (ATC) will be a four round series, including Targa Wrest Point, the Mt Buller Sprint, the Lake Mountain Sprint and Targa Tasmania, and will be organised jointly by Octagon Australia and Mountain Motorsports.

The winners of the Championship will rightly be known as the best tarmac rallying teams in the country.

Targa Tasmania Event Director, Mark Perry, feels the time is right to finally link the iconic Targa Tasmania brand to a championship.

"Competitors have been telling us that they want a national tarmac rally championship, but that it had to include Targa Tasmania, which is seen as the Bathurst or our sport," Perry said.

"The introduction of Targa Wrest Point, and the opportunity to make Targa Tasmania the final round, meant the time was right for us to make our events part of a national series."

The ATC will provide a boost to the two Victorian based rounds as competitors chase the vital points needed for victory.

The Mt Buller Sprint from December 4 to 6 will kick-start the championship and Event Director, Peter Washington, is very excited to be hosting the first ever round.

"This new championship is a big step forward for the tarmac rallying community in Australia," Washington said.

"Combining the four unique events will provide an exciting challenge for all crews, no matter what car they compete in.

RSH_sprint.jpg"We have a great working relationship with Mark Perry and everyone at Octagon and we look forward to crowning our first Champions in late April at Targa Tasmania."

While the first round will be held in late 2009, the inaugural winners will be crowned the 2010 champions.

The winners will enjoy prizes and trophies totaling over $30,000, with the Champions presented in conjunction with the `world's largest champagne shower' at Targa Tasmania on May 2, 2010.

The series will see separate titles for classic and modern cars, and all entries at all events will be automatically entered into the ATC at no extra charge.

The classic title will be for vehicles built between 1946 and 1982, and will be based on the handicap system currently used at Targa Tasmania.

"The history of tarmac rallying around the world sees all the famous European events, from Targa Florio to the Mille Miglia, being run with a handicap system, and with such a wide range of years and technology covered, this is the best option to ensure success," Perry said.

"Modern is a different kettle of fish, and this championship will take on a more familiar appearance with the winners simply being the fastest crew at each event."

Competitors will be able to drop their worst result if they compete in all four rounds, and Targa Tasmania will carry additional points due to its status in the sport and the difficulty in achieving a good result in the five-day classic.

2010 Australian Tarmac Championship Dates

o Round 1: Mt. Buller Sprint - December 4 to 6 , 2009

o Round 2: Targa Wrest Point - January 30 & 31, 2010

o Round 3: Lake Mountain Sprint - March 20 & 21, 2010 - To be confirmed

Marysville-Lake Mountain Challenge

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort and Cyclesport Victoria are pleased to announce that the Marysville-Lake Mountain Challenge will be held on the 20th February 2010.

RSH_challenge.jpgThe Marysville-Lake Mountain Challenge was launched in May 2009. An event that was in the planning stages before the Black Saturday bushfires, Cyclesport Victoria and Lake Mountain Alpine Resort were commited to ensuring that the event still went ahead.

Named the Marysville-Lake Mountain Fire Relief Ride, the event attracted over 1500 entrants. Organisers are planning for an even bigger and better event.

In 2009 the event attracted some big name riders including five time Olympian Shane Kelly, who was the ambassador for the event and Brad Scott ex AFL football player for the Brisbane Lions.

Cyclists can participate in one of two rides, a 66km or the 140km ride, further details of the event will be posted on the website as they become available.

To co-incide with cycling event Lake Mountain will be organising a mountain bike event on the same day to stage one of the new mountain bike trail network.

July 1st Fire Update
Jul 22, 2009

Media Release - Lake Mountain Wednesday 22nd July.

Burnt Ski HireOn Wednesday 1st July 2009 at approximately 4.45pm a fire at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort destroyed the resorts Ski Hire/Retail and Ski School outlet. The fire caused an estimated $500,000 worth of damage to the main visitor centre, adding to the significant loss that was encountered through the Black Saturday bushfires.

The fire burnt the resorts equipment including toboggans, boots, skis and poles, also the computer and eftpos system and building infrastructure. The building suffered severe smoke damage and incurred loss of power, telephone and internet in the days after as a result of the fire.

Staff and management at Lake Mountain have worked tirelessly since February to get the resort operational for snow season 2009 and for this to happen is just devastating.

ski_hire_after.jpgWith the same positive attitude that saw the resort open after the Black Saturday bushfires, management ensured that the Visitor Centre was back up and running the day following this most recent setback.

A temporary hire outlet and retail shop has been set up in the public shelter of the main building and the resort is currently hiring toboggans and snow shoes, with the skis being ready for hire, hopefully by the weekend. Ski lessons are back up and running.

Visitors are still encouraged to visit Lake Mountain and enjoy the natural beauty and snow facilities which the resort has on offer, however should be reminded to come prepared and utilise the facilities in nearby Marysville for equipment hire.

We are making snow today!!
Jun 06, 2009

The new snow making system is working

SNOW FOR THE OPENING OF THE SEASON. Wonderful!!!

The WYSS Snow Making System

4.jpg This fantastic snow making system is now here from Europe and has been installed. It will enable us to make snow in air temperatures way above freeezing point ... up to 350C. It will eliminate many of the problems we have had in the past concerning snowmaking. We can channel snow made by the system to where we want it then use snow grooming equipment to spread it out. In Europe this system has been used to create ski racing circuits around local towns and villages when natural snow has failed.

We will be using the system to make snow 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!!!

The man made snow is more durable than natural snow and as this snow is produced at very cold temperatures it helps freeze the ground .... thus helping to preserve any natural snow that falls.

This image was taken after a few hours of production. The unit can produce 24 cubic metres of snow in a 24 hour period.

Bushfire recovery Update.
Mar 17, 2009

The Resort WILL be open for the 2009 snow season

Bushfire recovery update: 3rd April 2009

What happened?

The Black Saturday fires caused significant damage to the Resort. The main toilet block and trail head facilities, ski patrol building, takeaway food building, rotunda and bbq, machinery sheds, and were destroyed along with much of the resorts machinery and tools. Parts of the snow making system were destroyed making it inoperable.

The fire swept up and across the Lake Mountain plateau and has burned many of the snow gums and heathlands. The trail network has been damaged.

The toboggan slopes, Snowy Hill and Arnold's gap facilities are relatively undamaged.

The main visitor centre which houses the ski hire, bistro, day shelter and resort administration was NOT affected by the fires and this facility is fully operational

All of Lake Mountain's staff have been affected by the fires by the loss of their homes, or in two cases, the loss of a family member. To their great credit all have returned to work ready and willing to assist Lake Mountain ... and the local community ... recover from this disaster.

Recovery plans:

Lake Mountain has the support of the state and federal governments and many government agencies in its desire to be ready to open for this winter. We are committed to make it happen. Lake Mountain will play a huge role in the recovery effort by attracting people back into the local area. The snow season will provide a much needed boost to all regional businesses. Lake Mountain will provide jobs for local people.

Some specifics:

o    Our staff are now back at work

o    "Containers" and temporary buildings will be fitted out to provide toilets, day shelters, workshops and first aid/ski patrol facilities

o    New snow grooming machines and snow mobiles have been ordered

o    A new snow making system (that can make snow at higher temperatures) has been ordered. This will enable more snow making than ever before!!

o    Ski trails are being cleared, repaired and new culverts being built.

o    Toboggan slopes sustained very little damage.

o    Dangerous dead trees are/will be removed

o    Destroyed buildings are being removed now as part of the State Government's site clearing program with Grocon.

o    All essential services (power, water, telecommunications and sewerage) have been re established at the main visitor centre.

o    Main visitor centre ski hire, ski school, Heights bistro, resort administration and the lower level day shelter were NOT damaged.

o    The road from Marysville all the way to the Lake Mountain village has been be repaired and resurfaced where required.

o    The planned bike riding event for the 2nd and 3rd of May will be going ahead as planned ... but bigger. Stay tuned for more information.

o    The Lake Mountain website will be the main source of the latest information.

o    To assist local and regional businesses recover, accommodation, restaurant and associated tourism businesses will be offered FREE advertising on the Lake Mountain website for 2009. Please fill in the online forms found on www.lakemountainresort.com.au. Click Here for the form

o    Lake Mountain is part of many of the fire recovery groups and is making sure this area is well represented around all forums.

o    Tourism Victoria and Yarra Valley Regional marketing are likely are  providing resources to promote that Lake Mountain will be open this winter. They recognize how important the snow season will be to aide local and regional business recovery.

o    A  visit to the snow at Lake Mountain will be a positive way to help the bushfire recovery effort.

o    The Resort is now OPEN.

Works are underway. Natures recovering
Mar 27, 2009

Getting ready for winter

The recovery is happening. Lake Mountain has employed extra staff to complete the works required to get us ready for winter. Jobs are available now. Have a look on the employment section of the website.

The images below show one of our hard working crews repairing/replacing a fire damaged culvert which allows efficient drainage across the ski trail. These culverts minimise any risk of erosion and enable skiers to enjoy a well groomed, uninterupted trail surface.

Mark sets Olympic qualifying times
Feb 03, 2009

News from Mark Raymond in Europe

What an adventure....deep snow, storms and more but he still set Olympic qualifying times.

Mark Raymond is a young local skier sponsored by Lake Mountain.

IBU Race Report Obertilliach and Martell

The skiing conditions in Obertilliach for the first of my IBU Cup race were excellent, around 1 metre of snow with mild temperatures. The week before the competition the snow started to fall again. It didn't stop for 5 days, increasing the snow base to over 2 metres. I am currently staying with the NZL and BRA team in a small town call Bergen around 1 km down from Obertilliach where the IBU Cup was being held.

The first problem I encountered for the race was my rifle stock failed to comply with the IBU regulations. I was told it was 3mm too wide in the pistol grip. This was very strange to hear as I have raced 6 World Cups and 2 World Championships with the same stock and it had passed every time without question. The official who measured it used a school ruler with the end broken off to make the precise measurement. Having to cut my rifle stock down two days before the competition, became a logistical nightmare. I had to drive to the city of Leinz during a snow storm to pick up tools and glue to cut the wood and Carbon fibre on my stock.. The return trip from Leinz was during a wild snow storm. The van I was driving on just made back up to the village with the amount of snow on the road.

I was to find out the following morning that I was probably one of the last cars to make it up the mountain, the road was closed off due to the amount of snow falling and the risk of avalanches. I cut my rifle stock down to fit with the dubious measurements given to me during the morning.

The snow didn't stop falling and all the roads stayed closed. We were cut off from the main village of Obertilliach. I was unable to get to the shooting range for training the day before the first IBU Cup race. Instead, I ski up to the village on Mountain Touring Skis to get some bread for the day. On my return trip I encountered a keen local desperately trying to get home.

We had a meet among the nations I was staying with. We were started to get worried about making it to the race the following morning. We all spent the afternoon digging our Van out of the snow. We still couldn't drive it anywhere as the roads still hadn't been cleared and was closed.

By Friday evening the race committee had decided to still hold the race even know there were athletes and coaches suck unable to make it to the race venue. Our coach Joe was on the other side of the mountain 10km from Obertilliach unable to get to the shooting range either.

We talked to the lady who owned the apartments we were staying in explaining our problem of getting to the race the following morning. A plan was hatched to take us(AUS, BRA, NZL and SLO) up to a hotel in Obertilliach Friday night by an over-snow tractor. We had half an hour to pack our gear for the race. Our transport was then cancelled due to the fact the tractor could make it to us. Another plan was hatched, if the snow let up the farmers would dig a track through the fields using machines, to where we were staying and tow us out. The road still couldn't be used due to the avalanche risk.

Morning broke and the snow had let up a little, it was still snowing lightly. The nervous energy was high among the team. I was sure the race committee would cancel or postpone to the race however we got the message that the race was still on. The farmers had been busy all morning digging the track through the fields for us to get back to the village. The plan was for us to drive in out van along the deep trench track until we got stuck and a tractor would pull us the rest of the way. The trench through the 2 metres of snow was only just wide enough for the van. The mirrors had to be folded in so we could fit. We travelled about 500m before our van got stuck. This caused a small problem as I could get the door open to get out. We worked out the towing system after much searching under the van. The next problem was the tow rope didn't fit through the eye bolt. After much Germany, English misunderstood conversation, I showed the farmer what I had in mind, by using the van's jack handle to hold the tow rope. We finally made it to the village where the road was cleared the 1km to the Ski Stadium. Shaking my head in disbelief that the race was still being held we drove into the freshly cleared car park at the Ski Stadium.

Saturday was the 20km race with 4 shooting bouts. The course was soft after all the s fresh snow. It suited the lighter athletes such as myself, as we don't sink into the track as much. Our coach Joe was still stuck in Kartish 10km away where the road was still closed. We helped each other zero our rifles before the race.

I skied conservatively from the start trying to ski relaxed after a nervous morning. I was skiing fast and had passed many athletes on my first lap. I shot clean hitting all my targets in the first shoot in prone position. I missed 1, 2 and 3 targets in my following shooting bouts as the fatigue set in. This gave me a time penalty of 6 minute which was added to my overall ski time. It was a good result for my first 20km of the season, my ski time was excellent, shooting was average. There was a nervous wait for the results to be posted. Many thoughts racing through my head.

Would my name be above the "Q" line?

Would this be my first Olympic qualifying time?

My result was, well within the "Q" line. This was my first result to meet both Australian and the International standard for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. However there is two results required to meet the B Olympic criteria fully.

The following day brought more snow but the road to the ski stadium and to town was open from Bergen. The 10km race in Biathlon is called a sprint, as it's the shortest distance raced. In the Sprint athletes shoot twice, in both positions and ski 150m penalty for each target missed.

Starting the sprint race I found myself settling into a fast but relaxing pace, working the hills to make up time and positions. I felt very strong and confident of a good race. I missed 2 targets in both prone and standing which saw me ski an extra 600m of penalties. The result again was well above the "Q" line on the result sheet. So relieved to see my name above the line, I felt like a weight had been lifted of my shoulders. I have now met the Australian and International Olympic "B" criteria. This will place me on the Olympic Shadow Team for 2010 as an athlete having met our Olympic standard. I will still need to qualify Australia a position in Nation Cup Points at the World Championships in February.

The international team of NZL, BRA and AUS left Obertilliach for the drive into Italy for the next IBU Cup race in the Mertello Valley. We first had to get wheel chains for our van as there was so much snow the road clearers couldn't keep up. Martell is really only a Biathlon range set at the far end of the Martello valley. It is a very spectacular place with steep mountains all around. The range itself has a small river running through between the shooting mats and the targets. The trails were challenging, however not very exciting to ski.

I was feeling quite tired after the events of the pass few days so took an unscheduled rest day in the hope I would start feel better. The altitude of the Biathlon range in Martell was around 1700m making even an easy ski feel like a race.

I trained two days on the shooting range before the race. Each day the shooting conditions were very difficult with the wind. The morning of the race the wind was stronger than it had been in training. I had many problems getting my rifle to shoot centre. The wind would change direction every 5 minutes.

Starting the 10km sprint race, I felt my skiing form was good as I chassed down an athlete from Norway. I knew shooting was going to be a lottery with the wind. I came into my prone shoot and the wind was going in all directions. I hit my first target but then missed the next two. I adjusted my rifle sights but still missed, unsure of the wind or adjustment I fired my last shot and to my surprise I hit it. Standing shoot went better only dropping one to the wind. This gave me a total of 600m of penalties to ski. Skiing hard on the last lap I felt my skiing was going well. Exhausted I glided over the finish line happy with my skiing.

The results were released soon after the last competitor had finished. I placed well above the "Q" line. I placed 65th out of 132 athletes. I missed the pursuit by 5 places. Disappointing, whoever very close, only second had me out of the top 60. One less penalty and I would have placed well in the top 60 and qualified for the Pursuit race.

This result was my third Olympic qualifying time. I have now qualified in every race this season. I believe I am in good form to start World Cup after Christmas. I will train back in Obertilliach over the Christmas brake before heading to Germany for World Cup.

I hope you are well.

Thank you for your support,

Mark Raymond

Local skiers qualify for world cup
Feb 02, 2009

Well done Andrew and Mark.

Lake Mountain Resort sponsored skiers Andrew Wynd and Mark Raymond have both qualified for the 2009 Nordic World Skiing Championships to be held in Liberec, Czech Republic, in late February.

The pair are members of the Australian XC Ski team and recently travelled to New Zealand's Snowfarm Ski resort, where they both skied personal best FIS points that qualified them for the championships.

Mark and Andrew will now have the chance to test themselves against some of the fittest athletes in the world when they travel to Europe this coming summer. This will be Andrew's second World Championships, having represented Australia at Sapporo, Japan in the 2007 event. This will be the first time Mark has skied in a cross country World Championship as he is more well known as Australia's current champion in Biathlon.

Mark and Andrew train predominantly at Lake Mountain Resort and contribute much of their success to the challenging network of trails that Lake Mountain offers. The resort has proudly assisted these two athletes for many years and congratulates them on their effort in representing Australia. Mark is a local who has skied at Lake Mountain and has been supported by local businesses in his pursuit to represent Australia in international ski events.

New snow play area for Lake Mountain
May 05, 2008

Even more fun at Lake Mountain?

Lake Mountain will have a new snow play area ready for action this winter. The new Toboggan slope is in a great sheltered spot surrounded by beautiful sub alpine  forests. The snow gums and a carpet of white snow is a uniquely Australian experience.

The moderate sloped sections will be great for the younger tobogganners and the steeper section will provider some faster action. The 200m access track to the toboggan slope opens up a huge area for snowplay. There will be plenty of space to build a snowman or to throw a snowball. Great fun.The forests that surround this area are also home to Leadbeaters possums. These Possums are treasured and highly protected at Lake Mountain.
